Slouching Towards TechCrunch50

THE SECOND COMING OF THE WEB

Turning and turning in the widening Web
The consumer cannot hear the brand;
Things fall apart; it was someone else's fault;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon destination sites,
The blood-dimmed tide of social media is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of loyalty is drowned;
The best are all retired, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity for stupid business plans.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of servers;
A business model based on eyeballs and user generated content,
A revenue model as blank and pitiless as a new Excel file,
Is moving its slow mind, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant wantrepreneurs.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That ten years of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by Twitter's valuation,
And what rough beast, whose hour should never come,
Slouches towards Palo Alto to be born?
